(Ben Webster, Don Byas, Charlie Ventura and Ted Nash) on two tracks each recorded in the mid ?40s. The only ringer is a 19-year-old Stan Getz, a Lester Young devotee, who-according to annotator Scott Yanow-?shows off the unexpected influence of Hawkins?during these intriguing performances.? Oh?Except for Hawkins, heard here with a septet led by Cozy Cole, the others are featured in a quartet setting. While I can?t imagine any JazzTimes reader of ?a certain age? who doesn?t already have something more important by each of these men I must say I was very pleasantly surprised by Les Brown bandsman Nash?s lively take on ?Annie Laurie? and Webster?s finding something new to say on ?Body and Soul?
